The Smallville Treatment: Themyscira
Sep. 14th, 2007 09:37 pmFrom a thread I started at Newsarama:
If each of DC's major heroes got a Smallville-esque reboot, what would it be like? I'm sure it's probably been done before, but give a whirl anyway. According to you, would are the necessary elements needed to tell the story of a young Princess Diana?
Anything goes, you can even cast them if you want. Don't be afraid to introduce new characters, like Smallville did, change some established ones around, whatever you want. The any requirement imposed by me is that, much like Smallville, the first episode must have a flashback.
My take:
The first episode would open with a caption telling the viewers they are witnessing ancient Greece. It's the classic origin, Heracles and his cronies vs Hippolyta and the Amazons. A voice tells us that Heracles is after Hippolyta's golden belt. When he was unable to win it off her fairly, he tricked her into believing he loved her and took it by force. The Amazons retaliated to get it back. Hippolyta eventually subdues Heracles, but before she can strike the killing blow Zeus intervenes.
To make up for his son's actions, Zeus imprisons him beneath a dimensional rift, he also gives the Amazons immortality and gives them an island paradise to live on. The voice over tells us that we're now just a few short years behind present time. Though Hippolyta is enjoying paradise, she longs for a child. The gods appear again and instruct her to mold the child out of clay and they will breath life into it. The traditional gifts are given to her.
In the present day, Diana has grown into a healthy and beautiful young woman. She enjoys her life in paradise and has never questioned her mother's edict that the outside world is not worth knowing. She has a younger sister who washed ashore years ago with no memories save one, her name: Donna, and this is only from a beaded necklace she wears. She would be a foil to the more responsible Diana, and also provide general mischief.
The first episode would reveal that because of the spell that keeps Themyscira from aging a small dimensional rift runs around the island, and the occasional monster wanders through the dimensional border. Of course, the Amazons make short work of any such beast. The Amazons also have advanced technology because of the rift, every now and then random objects would fall through and they would replicate it with the island magic users. Eventually they got the hang of it and began producing items themselves.
Throughout the first season it will be revealed that more and more monsters seem to be coming through the rift, and the Amazons have no explanation for it. Eventually it will be revealed that the sorceress Circe has been manipulating the temporal insecurity of the island, hoping to bring on army of monsters through so that she may rule the world.
Also running through the season is the subplot of Steve Trevor. He's just a young man, not a pilot yet. His uncle gave him flying lessons secretly growing up and one night Steve steals a plane and sails out over the ocean, looking for his father who disappeared when he was small.
When he crosses over Themyscira, which he can't see beneath him, winged monsters (harpies, maybe) escape the rift and attack him. Diana hears the commotion and flies up to beat the harpies off, but the plane crashes into the island before she can catch it. Several episodes after this will see the Amazons dealing with a man, even a half grown one amongst them, and Diana's nursing him to health. Hippolyta decrees that the man may stay on Themyscira, but he may never leave it, for fear that he may tell the outside world of their island. Throughout the season, Steve will struggle with his coming to terms with his new life, his and Diana's growing attraction to each other, and Hippolyta's intense distrust of his motives.
The last episode of the season will see Diana fight Circe into the rift, which they have located a portal to underground. The same portal used to banish Heracles, and during their battle Heracles appears. Claiming to have found humility in his exile he pulls Circe in and they both tumble back down into the rift. At the last second, Diana catches his hand and pulls him out. They just make it out before the rift closes, sealing Circe away forever. Diana and Heracles walk out of the cave and into the midsts of the cheering Amazons.
They stop cheering in shock when they see Heracles. Out of the crowd, Steve steps up and stares at Heracles.
"Dad?" He whispers.
Smash cut, episode ends. TBC next season...
Well, that's my take. What's yours?
