If I see another one of those goddamned wedding ring commercials, I swear to god. Every time I see one of those women gasp in surprise I just wanna scream "YOU'RE A GROWN WOMAN, BITCH! PICK YOUR OWN DAMN JEWELRY!! GRRR ARRRRGGGH!"

Not the woman's fault.

It's paternalistic.
The guy who surprises her with it, picked the ring out that if she accepts she will have to wear for years and years until he dies or they divorce or if she's smart she loses and gets to chose the one she really would have wanted.

It's all sales hype any way. *shrugs*

No, it is not all the woman's fault, but she definitely shares some blame. If she had made it clear that marriage was something they were undertaking together and that the ring was something they would be buying together then the guy would know not to spring that patriarchal bullshit.

They just make me crazy.

I hate the Valentine's Day cell phone commercials. I mean, YOU have to pay for the monthly bills. A cell phone is a technological investment. I'm a grown woman. I like to do my own research. If a boy bought my a cell phone, my reaction would be "thanks, but I was going to invest in an iPhone not a Blackberry. Do you have a reciept?"

I don't like boys buying big, important things without imput. It's a sweet gesture, but it's also kind of a dick move. Women can pick out their own important accessories.

I hate the jewelery commercials that show a clap of thunder and the woman being all "OMG! NATURE!" and the boy being "Don't worry. I'll always be here." Boo. What does your ability to commit have to do with weather, and why is a grown woman randomly freaking out like a scared cat over a little rain? Do. Not. Want.

There is not enough eye roll in the world for those ads. Srsly.

Luckily I did pick my own jewelry, otherwise I would've ended up with a ring chosen by my then best friend. She'd offered to help my soon-to-be fiancee, had a thing for him herself, and chose the ring she wanted him to give her. Bitch.
