Also, the "jacket" text:

Since the Great War in Heaven, the foremost of the archangels has walked among man. Incarnating every generation, the battle commander of Heaven’s army has lived and died as mortals do. That’s me, by the way—Leader of the Heavenly Hosts, Wielder of the Fiery Sword, Demonslayer.

My name is Michael, and I’m God’s gift to humankind. Literally.

Yes! I totally finished Lessons Pt 2 tonight before the socialism. Now I just have to get it edited and stuff and then post it. That will prolly have to wait until tomorrow. Still, I'm pretty happy. Finally churned it out.
sethgray: (Default)
Today I have written seven and a half pages. The only trouble is, it was on a fanfic, lol. That's okay, though, because Lessons has been languishing on my hard drive forever. But today the muse was just like, "Well, what's taking so long?"

And I was all, "Bitch, don't even start with me. That's what happens when you just up and leave for four months."

So anyway, I'm gonna keep picking at it tonight and hopefully finish the second part. Oh, I said back in the beginning it was gonna be three parts, but it looks like it's gonna be 4 parts now. These two parts, the morning after, and then a fun little scene I've had in my head forever. After that, who knows? At this rate, it's probably gonna be next year before all four parts are written, so I may have a whole host of ideas by then.

That would be wild, wouldn't it? My very first fic 'verse. Whoa, Seth, easy now. No need to get carried away before the second part is even done. *deep breathes*

GAH!

For some reason today, the writing didn't start happening until four o'clock. Instead I read some fic, which turned out to be a good thing because it put me in the right mood to write Jason's mother. Apparently I need to be sliced up inside with just the tiniest sliver of hope for her to come out onto the page. Not good for her chances of appearing more often because I cannot get this twisted up just to get one character to talk to me.

Anyway, Chapter Seven is done. Finished just a little after six. Although I didn't start until later, I think that's the most uninterrupted I've written a chapter on this book. It was brutal, seriously. I hope it reads as visceral as it writes, because it was some pretty harsh stuff to crank out. Only time, as they say, will tell that, though.

Now, I'm off to go rework some of the info posts on the fiction journal before heading to a friend's to catch Supernatural.

Recording yourself is strangely addicting. I now have an understanding of myspace camera hoes. As I described some posts down, I've been recording myself speaking the chapters to help in my editing process. It was kind of a hassle at first, but now I kinda like it. I even signed up for a youtube channel to post the recordings on if people were interested. If it reaches that point, I'll need to redo them because I screw up quite a lot. And I haven't finalized edits on the earlier chapters even, so there's that as well.

But, regardless. If anyone is interested in that, head over here and let me know.

I must advise those who would be listening with a weak immune system--my voice has teh!gay. Consult your local medical practitioner to see if it's catching this season.

I didn't ever post yesterday besides my little quickie so here's what I have decided. I think Chapter Five is staying where it is. I finished Chapter Six, although it turned out differently than I wanted it to in my head. Something that I had originally scheduled to happen in Six ended up not happening, so now I'm not sure where I'm gonna stick it in. Post Chapter Nine it looks like from this week's notes, but things are subject to change.

I really despise outlining, but I might have to sit down and reorganize the list of events I have made in my big black notebook. I'm really not looking forward to it, but it might become necessary. I've already deviated quite a bit from the list anyway. Having the list become obsolete defeats the purpose of the list in the first place.

Today Jason faces the fourth of the unthinkable horrors he promises us on the title card. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Just stopping in to say that as of right now the word count on GBatB is 14141. It's lolarious.

Well, today I have managed exactly two pages and one line of new material today, but I did spend a few hours making voice recordings of chapter one so I could listen to it. Meilin suggested I try this and now I've found a free program that will accomplish this I gave it a shot. It actually does help.

Also, I think I'm having a block because chapter five needs to move. It might be too early for the weird shit. Some writers can just move and force themselves to write and come back and fix that kind of problem, but I've never been able to do that. In fact, getting two pages out of myself today was pretty impressive, really. This week is probably shot unless I make a decision quickly. I might skip the current six and move on to the encounter Jason has with his mother. That will probably help get the juices going...Yeah, I might have to try that tomorrow.

So I kinda forgot to post today. Oops. Oh well, anyway I wrote that scene I was talking about yesterday, but then I decided it fit bitter in chapter five than as a chapter on its own. It's only three and a half pages, anyway. This way all the really weird is kept in one chapter, and the rest of the story can go on as normal. I think I'll try and keep that pattern; all the scenes with that group of characters will be as self-contained as possible.
sethgray: (Default)
I realized that I forgot a morning post, lol. Oh, well. Today I finally got through chapter five. There's some stuff in the beginning I need to tweak, and a few descriptions I need to add, but it's done. I wrote five and a half pages today, and it finally feels like things are back on track. I have this scene brewing in my head that may or may not make it into the next chapter. It's pretty fun. I think I'm going to go write it and then see what I want to do with it.

Onward!

Well, after a couple of attempts I made a dialogue that I was satisfied with. It still feels a little too expository to suit me, but I think it's the best it's gonna get. This information must get out someway or another. So tomorrow I'm going to run through chapters three and four really quick to see if there's anything I want to tweak, and then I'll go on to new material.

It took me about three hours to come up with one that satisfied me. I started at about noon and I quit at four. I took a two hour walk after that (I just got back, in fact) to decompress. Man, trying to rework your old crap is hard. I pretty much scrapped it all and rewrote it all as if it were the first time. It fit the two characters that were talking better that way. I didn't get across everything I wanted to, but I got enough for the plot to advance. That will just have to do.

I read somewhere that keeping a journal before you start writing helps, so I've decided I'm going to make two posts a day. One before I start and one after. The problem is, what exactly do I write about before I've done anything? I'm not really sure my after post will be all that exciting anyway. All I'm doing today is changing like two pages of text into dialogue. I'm not even sure that will work like I want it to, but here goes it.
sethgray: (Default)
Thanks to Ms. Miranda's beta skills I now have a much firmer grasp on where I need to be for these intro chapters. I've spent the entirety of today taking apart the first chapter and making it better. Tomorrow will probably be chapter two, and I have a whole two pages of exposition that I have to turn into a dialogue somehow. I'm not sure two professionals would stand around a dead body and have this conversation, but I don't know how else to do it. Besides, readers expect and accept a certain amount of exposition, so long as it's not in a huge chunk of text like mine was. *headdesk*

Anyway, cutting it off early today because I'm going to dinner with a friend of my aunt's. Then I get to come home and enjoy [livejournal.com profile] softbluebuddy's new update to Hello Kitty. Hell yeah!

Also, the new "undead journal" menu bar is really annoying, isn't it?
sethgray: (Default)
Okay, so the "drastic measures" I was talking about a few posts down? I emailed the first four chapters of GBatB to a fantastic web author known as Meilin Miranda (her site is linked to in my sidebar) to beta. The whole time she kept telling me how she would say exactly what she thought and wouldn't hold back.

So I got the manuscript back today and I read through all of her comments. If that's how she thinks, she must be just about a saint because none of it was harsh in anyway.

I was kind of disappointed though because the chapters I thought sucked the most she had the least to say about. So I did suck, I just didn't suck where I thought I sucked.

Anyway, she was all worried I'd hate her or whatever, and that couldn't be less true. I'm positively excited to get to work.

I decided I was going to start making daily writing update posts again, but this week there wasn't a lot to report.

Whoa, this post was longer than I thought )

Geez, only I could say there's not much to report and then whip up that monster, hmm?
sethgray: (Default)
So, I've decided that one of Jason's (from GBatB) hobbies is going to come from his secret weakness for Soap Operas--the trashier, the better. The only problem with that is that I know nothing about Soaps, trashy or otherwise.

I guess I know what I'm doing for research today.

I got a new journal for my web fiction projects, [livejournal.com profile] seth_gray. I don't know if it will take the place of my wordpress or supplement it. WP is kind of a pain to use, and I'm already familiar with LJ. But, on the other hand, WP can get you your own host and domain and what not, and also looks more professional. I dunno, we'll see. Thoughts?

These past few days I have spent my time lounging in bed reading a variety of web serials that I never have read before, and probably would have turned my nose up at them even a few weeks ago. In the process of doing so, I have discovered something. I am working way too hard about about conjuring grand schemes and epic details and not doing enough actual fingers-to-keyboard pay off. The serials I've been reading lately aren't high literature; hell, sometimes they barely describe the main characters, and usually that kills any enjoyment I may have gained from the story. But you know what? I've enjoyed the hell out of myself anyway.

Oh, in case anyone's curious, here's the two pieces mainly responsible for my little change of heart:

(Shadow of the Templar)

(100 Candles)

Well, here's a story that popped into my head today about these two characters that've been brewing for awhile. I don't know why they chose this scene to be the first I write about them, but here they are.

I give you Hrothgar "Garth" the Red, and Illya Greenman.

Garth is a professional warrior that was betrayed by a compatriot and left for dead. Illya, a member of a traveling healer sect known as the Greenmen, found him and brought him to his camp to doctor him up. This scene takes place a while down the road, after Illya has left with Garth to see the world and find out for himself whether it's really the horrible place his people say it is.

This particular story is in media res, or it's already started for those not in the know. As I said, I don't know why they wanted me to pick it up here, but here it is nonetheless.

As always, point out any mistakes.
